Description
As part of a multidisciplinary team, CD+A developed landscape conceptual designs and construction documents to provide two new regional bus stops and other improvements for a new regional bus route that provides service along the Military Highway corridor between the Vallejo Ferry Terminal and the Walnut Creek BART Station. The bus stops include shelters, seating, and solar powered adjacent bike lockers. Other project features include on-street parking, improved and more comfortable pedestrian facilities, bike lanes, and streetscape enhancement including pedestrian and street lights, enhanced crosswalks, and landscaping.
During the conceptual design phase, CD+A developed a series of design alternatives that explored different layout options of bus stop amenities and the location and configuration of the required parking spaces at each of the two bus stop sites. At the bus stop adjacent to City Park, an important city landmark and public open space, design efforts focused on opportunities to extend the sidewalk area available to pedestrians and bus passengers through a reduction of space used for traffic lanes and on the sensitive integration of bus stop and parking along the edges of the park. For the western bus stop site, a road diet approach was applied to Military Highway to create space for the desired bus stop amenities and parking spaces. The resulting design aimed to achieve a speed reduction of vehicles entering Benicia from the nearby Interstate 780. CD+A also provided landscaping related bid and construction support services. The project was designed and constructed in two phases.
